What makes this tour special

Vilnius is an incredibly dynamic city, brimming with history, charm and creativity. For visitors seeking a deep dive into the Lithuanian capital’s past and present, our private half-day walking tour combines an exploration of the UNESCO-listed Old Town with a taste of the lively modern city, embarking on a carefully planned route through Vilnius with a knowledgeable local guide.

On your private half-day walking tour, you will:

This private half-day walking tour offers a richly layered introduction to Vilnius, ideal for travellers who want to go beyond the highlights and gain a deeper understanding of the city with the guidance of a local expert. Beginning in Cathedral Square, the historic and symbolic centre of the capital, your guide will introduce the stories, legends, and turning points that have shaped Lithuania and its capital over the centuries, starting with the Neoclassical Cathedral and its role in the nation’s spiritual and civic life.

From here, your guide will draw your attention upwards to the iconic Gediminas Tower, an ideal way to introduce you to the city’s medieval defences, its strategic importance, and the legend behind the decision to found Vilnius upon the hilltop more than 700 years ago. Depending on the time of year, we will venture up the hill to take in the views over the city from here, or ascend another spectacular viewpoint (such as the St. John's Church Bell Tower) later in the tour to experience the city from above. We will then venture further into the Old Town, past the Palace of the Grand Dukes, where your guide will tell the story of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, once one of the most powerful and far-reaching states in medieval Europe.

You'll make your way down Pilies Street, the oldest thoroughfare in Vilnius, where your guide can peel back the layers of history behind the elegant façades and continue past the majestic Presidential Palace, the cradle of modern Lithuanian democracy. You'll have the chance to peek into the inviting courtyards of Vilnius University, whose campus has been interwoven into the fabric of the Old Town since its founding in the 16th Century, giving you a glimpse into centuries of academic life and intellectual exchange at one of Eastern Europe’s oldest universities. Nearby, Literatų Street offers a more intimate cultural stop, with small art installations honouring the writers and poets who have shaped Lithuanian literary identity, before you pause to admire the refined Gothic beauty of St. Anne’s Church, one of the most picturesque spots in Vilnius.

The tour then widens its focus to explore Vilnius's multicultural fabric. Crossing into the self-declared Republic of Užupis, you’ll discover a neighbourhood defined by creativity and independence, where your guide will share how this former neglected area reinvented itself in the late 20th century, complete with its own playful constitution that reflects ideals of freedom, humour, and humanity. You'll also have the chance to explore sites connected to the city’s Jewish heritage and delve into the stories of what was one of the most significant communities in Vilnius before the Second World War. Of course, no introduction to Vilnius would be complete without Town Hall Square, a central stage for public life for centuries, and a fitting finale to your journey through the city.

This comprehensive tour is a great way to make the most of your time in Vilnius, immersing you in the different facets of the city and showing you what makes this Baltic metropolis special. Your guide will also happily provide you with inspiration for shopping, dining and more to explore.
