The distinctive octagonal tower stands at about 20 metres (65 ft) tall and is the last surviving part of the Upper Castle that once stood on top of Gediminas Hill. The tower is named after Grand Duke Gediminas, who founded Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital. Legend has it that while on a hunting expedition in the area, the Grand Duke had a dream about an iron wolf standing on a hill, howling with the strength of a hundred wolves. He took this as a sign to build a city there, and the original wooden castle was erected upon the hill as a result.
The wooden structure would be replaced with brick in the 14th-15th centuries during the reign of Grand Duke Vytautas the Great. The Upper Castle formed part of a larger defensive system that included a Lower Castle below. Over the centuries, the castle was damaged by fires, wars, and neglect. By the 19th century, most of it had been demolished or fallen into ruin, leaving only the tower. The tower now houses a small museum with various exhibits about the castle's history, medieval weapons, armour, and a scale model showing what the entire castle complex looked like in its prime.
