Vilnius Jewish Quarter

From the Middle Ages until World War II, Vilnius had an important Jewish community & the area around Žydų Street was the epicentre of Jewish life in the city.

Prior to WWII, Vilnius was home to one of the most significant Jewish communities in Europe, earning it the nickname, the "Jerusalem of the North." The historic Jewish quarter was located in the southern part of the Old Town, roughly in the area between what is now Vokiečių (German Street), Žydų (Jewish Street), Gaono, and Antokolskio streets. This area was densely packed with synagogues and prayer houses as well as Jewish shops and cultural institutions.

When the Nazis occupied Vilnius in 1941, they proceeded to establish two ghettos, and by 1943, nearly the entire Jewish population had been murdered. After the war, Soviet authorities demolished much of what remained of the Jewish quarter, including the ruins of synagogues and other historic buildings. In recent years, efforts have been made to revive Jewish culture in Vilnius, particularly on Žydų street, which hosts festivals, concerts, and lectures celebrating Jewish traditions.
