What makes this tour special

Zagreb is a fascinating metropolis with a big personality, born from its historical and geographic position at the crossroads of Central Europe and the Mediterranean. For centuries, Zagreb existed as two separate towns, Kaptol and Gradec, and the rivalry between them also shaped the city’s early character. It has been a major political and cultural hub for almost 500 years and was declared the capital of an independent Croatia in 1991. Since then, it has evolved into a dynamic and modern city known for its friendly locals and quality of life. Our private half-day walking tour is a great way to peel back the layers of Zagreb with a local guide who will show you key monuments around the city and help you understand how it became what it is today.

On your private half-day walking tour, you will:

Discover Zagreb in depth on a private half-day walking tour that brings the city’s history, culture, and architecture vividly to life. Beginning in Ban Jelačić Square, the bustling hub of the Croatian capital, your guide will set the stage with stories of how Zagreb grew from two rival medieval settlements into the expansive city it is today. From there, you’ll make your way to the Cathedral, Croatia’s tallest building and a stunning example of Neo-Gothic architecture, before stepping into the lively Dolac Market, known locally as the “belly of Zagreb”. Here, farmers and florists have gathered for generations, offering a colourful glimpse into daily life.

As you venture further into the Upper Town, you’ll stroll along the elegant Tkalčićeva Street and cross Krvavi Most (“bloody bridge” street), where your guide will reveal the origins of its rather gruesome name. You’ll then proceed to the Stone Gate, the last vestige of the city’s Medieval fortifications, where flickering candles keep centuries-old traditions alive. The walk continues through the charming Catherine’s Square and into the heart of St. Mark’s Square, where the vibrant tiled roof of St. Mark’s Church proclaims symbols of Croatian identity. Nearby, the Lotrščak Tower rises majestically above the city, and your guide will share the tale of the cannon that has thundered daily over Zagreb since the 19th century.

A pause at the Strossmayer Promenade offers sweeping views across the Lower Town, the perfect moment to take in the city’s layered history from above. Afterwards, you will descend into the modern heart of Zagreb to explore the elegant Lenuci Horseshoe, a remarkable feat of 19th-century urban planning that links together a series of parks and squares framed by grand cultural institutions, theatres, and museums. As you stroll through this picturesque green corridor, your guide will share the stories behind these landmarks, showing how Austro-Hungarian ambition left its mark on Zagreb’s identity.

Your tour concludes in the leafy tranquillity of Zrinjevac Park, where locals gather to relax beneath the trees and admire the weather vane that has become a symbol of the city’s spirit. Here, your guide will offer personal recommendations for the rest of your stay, ensuring you leave with not only a deeper understanding of Zagreb’s past but also the inspiration to continue your own exploration.

Please note: The famous Zagreb Funicular connecting the Upper and Lower towns is currently undergoing renovations until the Spring of 2026. Once it reopens to the public, the tour will include a funicular ride.
