Krvavi Most

Krvavi Most, or “Bloody Bridge,” is a historic lane in Zagreb named after medieval clashes between Gradec and Kaptol, now a peaceful spot with cafés and shops.

Krvavi Most, or the “Bloody Bridge,” is a small but historically significant street in Zagreb that recalls the city’s turbulent past. Despite its name, there is no bridge there today—only a narrow passage connecting Radićeva and Tkalčićeva streets in the old town. The name dates back to the Middle Ages, when a wooden bridge stood on the spot and frequent clashes took place between the citizens of Gradec and Kaptol, the two rival settlements that later united to form modern Zagreb. These violent skirmishes gave the bridge its ominous nickname, which has remained even after the structure disappeared. Today, Krvavi Most is a peaceful pedestrian lane filled with cafés and shops, offering visitors a charming place to stroll while also evoking the city’s layered and sometimes dramatic history.

Here, farmers and florists have gathered for generations, offering a colourful glimpse into daily life.

As you venture further into the Upper Town, you’ll stroll along the elegant Tkalčićeva Street and cross Krvavi Most (“bloody bridge” street), where your guide will reveal the origins of its rather gruesome name. You’ll then proceed to the Stone Gate, the last vestige of the city’s Medieval fortifications, where flickering candles keep centuries-old traditions alive.
