Discover the Óbidos wine region on a private day trip from Lisbon, featuring two winery visits with tastings, beautiful Obidós village and traditional Ginjinha.
Portugal’s wine heritage is as diverse as its landscapes, with centuries-old traditions sitting comfortably alongside innovative, modern winemaking. Just north of Lisbon, the rolling countryside surrounding Óbidos offers the perfect setting to discover both sides of this fascinating wine culture. This private full-day excursion combines visits to two exceptional local wineries with time to explore one of Portugal’s most picturesque medieval towns, creating a relaxed and enriching wine and cultural experience.
On your private full-day excursion, you will:
Your experience begins with pick-up from your hotel in central Lisbon, where you will meet your experienced professional driver-guide and journey north into Portugal’s scenic countryside. As you leave the city behind, rolling vineyards and rural landscapes begin to unfold, setting the tone for a relaxed day of wine discovery and cultural exploration.
Your first stop is a traditional winery, where you’ll be introduced to the Lisbon wine region’s long-standing winemaking heritage. Here, you’ll learn about traditional production methods, local grape varieties, and the unique climate that shapes Portuguese wines. During your visit, you’ll enjoy a guided tasting of three carefully selected wines, offering an authentic introduction to the flavours of the region.
Following your first tasting, you’ll continue to the enchanting medieval town of Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most beautifully preserved villages. Surrounded by ancient walls and filled with narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and colourful bougainvillaea, Óbidos offers a step back in time. As you wander through the charming town centre, your guide will show off major landmarks like the majestic Moorish castle and the lovely Santa Maria Church, and share stories of the town's rich history and famous royal residents across the centuries. You’ll also stop to taste traditional Ginjinha, the famous cherry liqueur often served in a small chocolate cup, a beloved local speciality and a delightful highlight of your visit.
There will be some free time for lunch in the heart of Óbidos (at your own expense), giving you the chance to relax at a traditional restaurant, explore some of the artisan shops, or continue strolling through the picturesque streets at your own pace. In the afternoon, your journey continues with a visit to a second winery, a modern establishment where contemporary techniques and innovative approaches to winemaking take centre stage. There will be another tasting experience, offering an interesting contrast to the morning visit and allowing you to sample three additional wines while learning how Portuguese producers blend tradition with modern expertise to create distinctive and high-quality vintages.
After a full day of wine tasting, cultural discovery, and taking in the scenic countryside, you’ll begin your comfortable return journey to Lisbon. By the time you arrive back at your hotel, you’ll have experienced the rich flavours, traditions, and landscapes that make Portugal’s wine regions so special.
