Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains are a stunning mountain range on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, known for their ethereal fog that creates a 'smoky' haze.

The Great Smoky Mountains, are a captivating mountain range straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. They are part of the Appalachian Mountains and are home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is the most visited national park in the whole of the U.S. The mountains get their name from the distinctive naturally occurring fog that rises from the valleys and gives them a misty, smoky appearance. This phenomenon is caused by the dense forests releasing moisture into the air in the form of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds scatter light, creating the signature smoky effect that makes the mountains look like they are covered in a soft, ethereal mist.

The Great Smoky Mountains have been inhabited for at least 12,000 years, with archaeological evidence suggesting that Indigenous peoples, including the ancestors of the Cherokee, lived in the region as early as the end of the last Ice Age. By around 1000 CE, the Cherokee had established permanent villages, developing a complex society with agriculture, trade networks, and spiritual traditions deeply tied to the land. They referred to the mountains as "Shaconage," meaning "place of blue smoke". Following the expulsion of the Native American people, European settlers moved into the area in the latter half of the 19th century, establishing small farming communities, logging operations, and mills. Many remnants of these settlements—such as Cades Cove and Elkmont—can still be visited today.
