What makes this tour special

Valencia, Spain’s third largest city, is a lively Mediterranean metropolis known for its charming historic centre, its striking modern architecture that presents a stark contrast with the centuries-old buildings of the Ciutat Vella, and its distinctive gastronomy and culture. Our half-day private walking tour led by a local guide offers a comprehensive introduction to Valencia, showing off its most important monuments and revealing the fascinating stories that have shaped the city from Roman times to the present day.

On your half-day private tour, you will:

Embark on a richly detailed half-day private walking tour that takes you beyond the surface and into the heart of Valencia’s history, culture, and daily life. Designed for travellers who want more than a quick overview, this immersive experience begins in the bustling Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the elegant City Hall and the grand Central Post Office set the tone for a city shaped by centuries of commerce, creativity, and Mediterranean exchange. With your local guide leading the way, you’ll explore the key characters and events that transformed Valencia from a nascent Roman settlement into one of Spain’s most important modern cities.

Your guide will lead you further into the Ciutat Vella, tracing a route filled with architectural treasures and cultural landmarks. At the Mercado Central, you’ll have the chance to step inside one of Europe’s oldest and most celebrated produce markets (opening hours permitting). Beneath its soaring modernist domes, your guide will introduce you to the essentials of Valencian gastronomy, from oranges and horchata to saffron and local seafood, while vendors and shoppers carry on traditions passed down through generations. A short walk away, you’ll find the magnificent Lonja de la Seda. Inside this stunning Gothic structure, you’ll hear how the booming silk trade brought wealth, influence, and stunning artistry to Valencia during the Middle Ages.

Continuing through the Old Town, you’ll discover some of the city’s most iconic squares. In Plaza de la Reina, you will pause to appreciate the surrounding cafés and baroque façades before entering Valencia Cathedral, where layers of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical design give you a glimpse of the different movements that have influenced Valencian art and architecture since its establishment in the 13th century (on the site of what had previously been a Roman temple, a Visigothic church and then a mosque). Leaving the cathedral complex, you will wander into Plaza de la Virgen, a beloved gathering place framed by historic stonework and dominated by the distinctive pink Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, an emblem of local devotion and identity dedicated to one of the city’s patron saints.

Your journey culminates at the Torres de Serranos, one of the few surviving gateways of the medieval city walls. Your guide will reveal how the towers have served various functions throughout history beyond their defensive purpose, from a ceremonial entrance for royalty, a prison for knights and nobility and even a hiding spot for priceless works of art from Madrid’s Prado Museum during the Spanish Civil War. Last but certainly not least, your urban adventure will come to an end overlooking the vast Turia Gardens. Once a riverbed and now one of Europe’s most admired urban parks, you'll find out how Valencia’s grand green oasis speaks to the city’s remarkable ability to reinvent itself.

With insights, recommendations, and the kind of context only a local can provide, this half-day tour leaves you with a deeper understanding of Valencia’s character, as well as a richer appreciation for the city that continues to balance tradition, innovation, and Mediterranean charm.
