Your day trip begins with pick-up from your hotel in central Lisbon, followed by a scenic drive south through the Arrábida Natural Park, a vast oasis where the mountains meet the sea. As you wind through forested hills and coastal roads, your guide will introduce you to the region’s unique landscapes and traditions. Along the way, you’ll stop at two viewpoints overlooking Portinho da Arrábida, where the contrast between green mountains and turquoise waters creates one of Portugal’s most striking panoramas.
Continuing toward the town of Setúbal that gives the peninsula its name, you’ll visit the colourful Mercado do Livramento, widely regarded as one of Portugal’s best traditional markets. Here, you spot locals gathered to shop for freshly caught fish, regional produce, and traditional delicacies amidst a backdrop of beautiful azulejo tiles that depict scenes from the region’s fishing heritage.
From Setúbal, you’ll board a ferry for a short crossing to the Tróia Peninsula, where the landscape shifts to peaceful rice fields, pine forests, and quiet coastal villages. Your next stop is Herdade da Comporta, one of the region’s most renowned wine estates. On a guided visit to the winery, you’ll learn about local grape varieties and the estate’s winemaking philosophy before enjoying a tasting of two of its exceptional wines.
The journey continues to the Carrasqueira Palafitic Pier, an extraordinary wooden structure built by local fishermen. Stretching over the marshlands, this rustic pier offers a unique glimpse into traditional fishing life and makes for a memorable photo stop. You’ll then enjoy free time for lunch (at your own expense) in the quaint village of Carrasqueira, where you can savour fresh seafood or relax in the tranquil surroundings.
After lunch, you’ll make your way to Comporta Beach, known for its golden sands, wild dunes, and laid-back atmosphere. Here, you’ll have time to unwind, go for a swim, or take in the views of this unspoiled coastline. If weather conditions are not suitable for the beach, your guide will instead take you to Alcácer do Sal, a charming and historic riverside town to explore the wealth of interesting landmarks nestled amongst its pretty whitewashed houses.
After a full day exploring coastal landscapes, local traditions, and regional wines, you’ll begin your comfortable return journey to Lisbon, arriving back at your hotel with a deeper appreciation for one of Portugal’s most beautiful and lesser-known regions.
Please note: We suggest bringing a bathing suit and a beach towel to enjoy Comporta beach.
