Spanning 252 feet high and over 6000 feet long, Table Rock Dam is a massive concrete embankment dam located on the White River in southwestern Missouri, near the city of Branson. It was completed in 1959 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The construction of the dam created Table Rock Lake, which is now one of the region’s most popular destinations for boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities. It took around 5 years to complete the dam, which was commissioned in response to severe flooding in the area in 1930s and 1940s. To this day it helps regulate water levels and reduce flooding along the White River while also generating hydroelectric power. Table Rock Dam is a concrete gravity dam, meaning its sheer weight resists the force of the water behind it. It is one of the largest dams in the region, carefully constructed to withstand immense pressure from Table Rock Lake’s waters.
The Ozarks are a truly unique natural landscape in the U.S. thanks to their distinct geology, biodiversity and cultural heritage. In fact, the Ozark Plateau is one of the oldest landforms in North America, a breathtaking series of steep ridges, deep valleys, and dramatic limestone bluffs shaped over hundreds of millions of years. Spanning an area of almost 47 000 Square miles, the sheer variety of landscapes—from dense forests to open glades—makes the Ozarks one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the central U.S., home to a fascinating mix of Midwestern, Southern, and Appalachian species, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The area is also steeped in history and folklore, from Native American heritage to hideouts for infamous outlaws and enduring pioneer traditions. Approximately two-thirds of the Ozark Plateau is located in Missouri, and the city of Branson, in particular, is a great jumping-off point for Ozark exploration. Embarking on a private driving tour in a 4x4 is an ideal way to take in the area’s scenic beauty and venture off the beaten path into the immense forests, remote trails and rugged backcountry areas.
