Diana's statue in the Sunken Garden

The statue of Princess Diana, in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, was commissioned by her sons and shows the Princess of Wales with children by her side.

The statue of Princess Diana is located in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace, which was one of her favourite places. Unveiled in 2021 on what would have been her 60th birthday, it was commissioned by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry and is intended to honour her memory and celebrate her life and legacy. Created by celebrated British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, the statue aims to reflect her warmth, elegance, and energy, as well as her impact on those she met and the causes she championed. The nearly life-size sculpture shows Diana standing surrounded by three children as a nod to her philanthropic work with children around the world. The design is meant to capture her spirit and the positive influence she had on the world.

The creative process involved various consultations with Prince William and Prince Harry to ensure that the statue accurately reflected their mother's likeness and the essence of her character. The surrounding Sunken Garden was also redesigned to provide a serene and reflective setting for the statue, in keeping with Princess Diana's appreciation for the location. The plinth contains an excerpt from the poem "The Measure of a Man" by Albert Schweitzer that was chosen to reflect Diana's role as a mother and her compassionate natures: "These are the units to measure the worth of this woman as a woman and a mother."

Once renowned for its wild criminality, Kensington is now a playground for the rich, and synonymous with luxury brands such as Harrods. Learn of the life and times of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert: the world in which they lived, and the enormous influence they had on wider society and indeed throughout Europe. Albert was a great innovator, fascinated by science, and it is thanks to him we have the world-renowned museums of the famous Exhibition Row: they were his brainchild for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. The area became known at the time as ‘Albertopolis.’

On entering Hyde Park, you’ll see Kensington Palace – home to the new Prince and Princess of Wales - William and Kate, and other members of the Royal family, and former home to Diana, Princess of Wales. You’ll walk along the Diana Memorial Walk and see the new bronze statue of the late princess in the sunken garden.
