Reformation Wall

The Reformation Wall is a famous memorial in Geneva's Old Town depicting the main Reformation leaders associated with Geneva, including John Calvin & John Knox.

Geneva's Reformation Wall, or Mur des Réformateurs in French, is an impressive monument dedicated to the Protestant Reformation, a movement in which the city played a central role. Located in the Parc des Bastions, just below the Old Town, it was built right into the old city walls that once fortified Geneva. Inaugurated in 1909 to commemorate both the 400th anniversary of John Calvin's birth and the 350th anniversary of the founding of Geneva's Academy, the wall stretches about 100 meters long and features massive stone statues and reliefs.

The centrepiece of the wall consists of four imposing statues of the main Reformation leaders associated with Geneva, namely John Calvin, the theological leader who made Geneva the center of Reformed Protestantism, Theodore Beza, Calvin's successor, John Knox, the Scottish reformer who studied in Geneva, and William Farel, a prominent French evangelist who convinced Calvin to join his efforts in Geneva. The wall also includes smaller statues and bas-reliefs of other Protestant reformers and important figures, as well as scenes depicting key moments in Reformation history.
