Bañuelo

El Bañuelo in Granada, a 11th-century Arab bathhouse, showcases Moorish arches, star-shaped skylights, and daily life traditions of Al-Andalus.

The Baño del Nogal, better known as El Bañuelo, is one of Granada’s hidden gems and among the best-preserved Arab baths in Spain. Built in the 11th century during the Zirí dynasty, it is located on the Carrera del Darro, at the foot of the Alhambra.

These baths were once part of daily life in Al-Andalus, serving not only as places for hygiene but also as social and cultural meeting points. Remarkably, while many Moorish baths were destroyed after the Christian conquest—often associated with immorality—El Bañuelo survived by being converted into a private residence, which helped preserve it.

Inside, visitors find three main rooms: the cold, warm, and hot baths, following the Roman-inspired structure adapted by Muslim culture. The most striking features are the star-shaped skylights in the vaulted ceilings, which filter sunlight into the rooms, creating a magical play of light and shadow. The stone columns and horseshoe arches also reflect the elegance of Islamic architecture in Granada.

Today, the Bañuelo is open to visitors as part of Granada’s Andalusian monuments, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city’s Moorish past and daily life almost a thousand years ago.
