Valley of the Mills

Nestled in the historic heart of Sorrento, the Valley of the Mills is a deep gorge with the ruins of abandoned buildings hidden amongst the lush vegetation.

The Valley of the Mills, or "Vallone dei Mulini" in Italian, is a deep ravine filled with some intriguing ruins located just a short walk away from the Piazza Tasso. It is actually visible from the square itself if you peer over the railings on the southern side. The valley dates back to ancient times and was once an important industrial area. The name derives from the fact that numerous water mills were built there, powered by the stream that flows through the valley. After modern industrial methods largely replaced traditional milling techniques at the beginning of the 20th Century, the mills were abandoned in the 1940s. Eventually nature took over, and the valley became overgrown with vegetation, creating a lush, picturesque scene punctuated by what remains of the buildings.

The striking vistas are popular with photographers, providing a stark contrast to the bustling streets above. They can be seen from various viewing platforms, and visitors wanting a closer look can descend a set of stairs from the city centre to gain access.
