Nice is a colourful city on the French Riviera with a distinctive personality shaped by its layered history. Founded by the Ancient Greeks, marked by centuries of Italian influence, and polished by the European aristocracy who made it their winter playground, this sun-drenched port at the foot of the Alps is unlike anywhere else in France, and our private, half-day driving tour is designed to show you exactly why. From the grand Promenade des Anglais to the cobbled streets of the Old Town, you’ll embark on a carefully curated route around Nice's major landmarks, enriched by the insights of a local expert guide.
On your private half-day tour, you will:
Your engaging orientation to Nice will begin directly from your hotel, where your experienced driver-guide will be on hand to ease you into the city the best possible way: a leisurely cruise along the Promenade des Anglais, the grand seafront boulevard that has defined Nice's glamorous image for over two centuries. With the Mediterranean sparkling to one side and a procession of belle époque facades to the other, it's a setting that stops people in their tracks, and there will be plenty of opportunity to pause for photographs along the way.
From the seafront, you'll head up to the top of the Colline du Château (Castle Hill), where a panorama unfolds that takes in the full sweep of the Baie des Anges, the terracotta rooftops of the old town, and the glittering harbour below. It's the kind of view that puts the whole city into context, and your guide will use it as the perfect moment to bring Nice's long and layered history to life.
Then it is time to delve into the heart of the city you have been admiring from above for a walking exploration of Vieux Nice, the old town that tumbles down from the hill in a maze of narrow streets, baroque churches, and vivid facades. This is where the city's distinctive Niçois identity, that irresistible blend of French sophistication and Italian soul, is most palpable, and your guide will help you find it, from the architecture and the street names to the snatches of local dialect you might overhear in passing.
While the exact route of your walk may vary, you’ll be sure to stop at the Cours Saleya, Nice's famous open-air market, where the stalls spill out beneath colourful awnings, and the air is thick with the scent of olives, flowers, and woodsmoke. This is the place to taste the food that defines the city: a piece of socca, that irresistible chickpea pancake, charred at the edges and soft within, or a slice of pissaladière, its slow-cooked onions and anchovy topping a perfect expression of Niçois flavour (Tastings not included).
After getting fully acquainted with Vieux Nice, you will hop back in the car to see more of the city, such as Cimiez, the verdant hillside neighbourhood with Roman roots, the legendary Hôtel Negresco, its pink dome an enduring symbol of Riviera opulence, and the sleek Art Deco facade of the Palais de la Méditerranée, each one a chapter in the city's architectural story. Throughout your time together, your driver-guide's deep knowledge of the city ensures that nothing is left unexplained. The history, the culture, the contradictions, and the charm are all woven naturally into the conversation as Nice reveals itself around you. When the tour draws to a close, you'll be returned to your hotel or another location of your choice, with a much better understanding of one of Europe's most captivating cities.
Discover Nice on a full-day tour, with a half-day spent wandering Old Town and the afternoon spent in the comfort of a private vehicle, exploring other city highlights less easily reached by foot.
On your private full-day tour, you will:
Step into one of the most iconic and idyllic cities in the French Riviera with a private guide to show you the best of the city. On your tour, you will explore the elegant square Masséna, see the many quaint boutique stores, the Opera de Nice, and the Palace Square, home to the stunning Palace of Justice. On the colourful Saleya Square, you will have time to enjoy the famous flower market stalls and some of the many local delicacies on offer when the market is operating (mornings, most days of the year).
The Old Town has some great eateries, old-fashioned bakeries, classic Italian ice-cream parlours and chocolate stores, and your guide will happily recommend several which you can pop into or return to after your tour. You will have time to try it all as well as to take wonderful photos of old Italian Nice.
Then visit Nice’s Castle Hill, which was the original site of the trading town founded by the Greeks 2,500 years ago. Not only will you visit Bellanda Tower and the sweeping waterfalls which cascade down to the sea, but also the magnificent viewpoints over the Bay of Angels and Old Town. After descending the hill, your guide will take you into the city centre or back into Old Town to enjoy an hour’s respite for lunch.
In the afternoon, hop in the car to cruise through several more of the city’s highlights, including Promenade des Anglais, a favourite walk-way of the European nobility of the last century and home to the magnificent Hôtel Negresco, the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée, and Le Opera de Nice. Then ascend Mont Boron for spectacular views over the mountainous and seafront landscape. Visit the Garden of Arenas Cimiez, ancient Roman ruins, which sit atop one of the hillsides of the area. After your tour ends, your guide will drop you off at your hotel or in the city centre, which you can discuss with your guide on the day of the tour.
