Castle Hill

Once the city’s citadel, Castle Hill is the best place for a breathtaking panoramic view of Nice and the French Riviera.

Castle Hill, or Colline du Château, is one of Nice’s most iconic landmarks, offering sweeping panoramic views over the Baie des Anges, the Old Town, the Port of Nice, and the distant hills of Provence. Despite its name, the castle that once stood here is long gone. It was destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV in the early 18th century, but the site remains a favourite among locals and visitors alike for its natural beauty and historical resonance.

Today, the hill is a peaceful public park filled with lush greenery, shaded pathways, waterfalls, and hidden viewpoints. It's also an archaeological and historical site, where you can see fragments of ancient fortifications and medieval walls. The climb to the top takes about 15 to 20 minutes on foot via stairways from the Old Town, or you can take the public lift at the foot of the hill near the Promenade des Anglais. Once at the summit, you're rewarded with breathtaking vistas and a welcome escape from the bustle of the city below.

Castle Hill isn’t just about the views; it's also a place to relax, picnic, and enjoy the serenity of nature in the middle of the city. Whether you’re up for a sunrise hike, a midday wander, or a sunset photo session, Castle Hill captures the essence of Nice from above.

Your engaging orientation to Nice will begin directly from your hotel, where your experienced driver-guide will be on hand to ease you into the city the best possible way: a leisurely cruise along the Promenade des Anglais, the grand seafront boulevard that has defined Nice's glamorous image for over two centuries. With the Mediterranean sparkling to one side and a procession of belle époque facades to the other, it's a setting that stops people in their tracks, and there will be plenty of opportunity to pause for photographs along the way.

From the seafront, you'll head up to the top of the Colline du Château (Castle Hill), where a panorama unfolds that takes in the full sweep of the Baie des Anges, the terracotta rooftops of the old town, and the glittering harbour below. It's the kind of view that puts the whole city into context, and your guide will use it as the perfect moment to bring Nice's long and layered history to life.

Then it is time to delve into the heart of the city you have been admiring from above for a walking exploration of Vieux Nice, the old town that tumbles down from the hill in a maze of narrow streets, baroque churches, and vivid facades. This is where the city's distinctive Niçois identity, that irresistible blend of French sophistication and Italian soul, is most palpable, and your guide will help you find it, from the architecture and the street names to the snatches of local dialect you might overhear in passing.

While the exact route of your walk may vary, you’ll be sure to stop at the Cours Saleya, Nice's famous open-air market, where the stalls spill out beneath colourful awnings, and the air is thick with the scent of olives, flowers, and woodsmoke. This is the place to taste the food that defines the city: a piece of socca, that irresistible chickpea pancake, charred at the edges and soft within, or a slice of pissaladière, its slow-cooked onions and anchovy topping a perfect expression of Niçois flavour (Tastings not included).

After getting fully acquainted with Vieux Nice, you will hop back in the car to see more of the city, such as Cimiez, the verdant hillside neighbourhood with Roman roots, the legendary Hôtel Negresco, its pink dome an enduring symbol of Riviera opulence, and the sleek Art Deco facade of the Palais de la Méditerranée, each one a chapter in the city's architectural story.
